AWCBC Research Project Summary
| Title: |
Back pain & work during pregnancy: identification of problems and biomechanical analysis |
| Issue: |
This study will identify tasks that are problematic for pregnant women in the hospital and academic sectors, and evaluate factors associated with pregnancy that increase back pain. |
| Objectives: |
• To better understand the causes, risks and biomechanics of back pain and other musculoskeletal problems for working pregnant women. • To identify occupational tasks that are problematic for the musculoskeletal system of employed pregnant women in the hospital and academic sectors. • To develop a biomechanical model and protocol that takes into account the changing body parameters of pregnant women to accurately evaluate the loads on the lumbar spine during realistic occupational tasks. • To perform a biomechanical analysis of selected tasks for a sample of women and compare postures and loads on the spine between pregnancy and post partum. |
| Anticipated Results: |
Short and long term benefits from the study are a better understanding of what tasks create musculoskeletal problems for pregnant women and how to make these tasks safer when possible. From the biomechanical analysis of specific tasks, it is expected that elements of solutions and recommendations will be formulated for a few particularly problematic tasks in the hospital and academic sectors. |
