The Association of Workers Compensation Boards of Canada, (AWCBC), produces these statistics for the National Work Injury Statistics Program (NWISP).
-
Statistics are generated when claims for injured workers are accepted and processed by Workers’ Compensation Boards and Commissions. These activities are similar but not identical at the various Boards and Commissions. All injury variables, from which tables in this publication are derived, are coded by the Boards and Commissions.
-
Work Injury, Disease and fatality statistics are based on definitions that my not be the same as statistics published in Worker Compensation Board/Commission annual reports.
-
Data is representative of the number of workers covered by compensation. Coverage differs from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. For example self-employed persons, professional offices, and industries such as finance may be excluded from mandatory coverage. Commonly, excluded businesses may apply for voluntary coverage.
-
Prior to 1997, work injury data was coded to the old standard, the Canadian Work Injuries Standard (CWIS). In instances when detailed tabulations are produced, data for years that span the transition from the old to the new coding standard (e.g. 1995-1998), the data will be converted back to the old standard (CSIS). This is due to the CWIS code data not easily converting to the new standard, NWISP.

The source of the data must be acknowledged if used in any other publication.

Any interpretations made by the user of the data provided by NWISP must be stated as being those of the user. The statement should include a note that such interpretations do not necessarily reflect the views of the AWCBC or any of its member Boards or Commissions.
-
Written permission must be obtained from the AWCBC prior to the publication of the data provided.
-
Data provided by the AWCBC in response to data requests will be supplied in Excel spreadsheets.
-
If a particular field is not mentioned in a table that cross tabulates by that field (e.g. Jurisdiction) it means that there were no records for that field that met the specified selection criteria.
-
If the tables show totals by Jurisdiction, please note that some jurisdictions may have high levels of un-coded claims.
