National Work Injury/Disease and Fatality Statistics Program (NWISP)

The statistics, produced by the Association of Workers' Compensation Boards of Canada (AWCBC) for the National Work Injuries Statistics Program (NWISP), are derived from administrative records for accepted time-loss injuries and fatalities at provincial/territorial workers' compensation boards or commissions (jurisdictions).

The following tables, Table 1. "Number of Accepted Time-Loss Injuries, by Jurisdiction 1982-2006", and Table 14 "Number of Fatalities, by Jurisdiction 1993-2006" are summary tables reproduced from the Association of Workers' Compensation Boards of Canada's annual publication, “National Work Injury and Disease Statistics (latest edition published in December 2007). The publication includes twenty additional tables (most of which contain data for three years) which are listed at the bottom of this page. Important information to note prior to reviewing the tables
Within each jurisdiction, the statistics are consistent over time, but differences may be observed if inter-jurisdictional comparisons are made (for example, specific businesses may be excluded from coverage in certain jurisdictions). Variances arise because differing acts, regulations operating policies and procedures among jurisdictions.

For purposes of these tables, ‘time-loss injury’ means an injury/disease) where an employee is compensated for a loss of wages following a work-related injury, or exposure to a noxious substance, or receives compensation for a permanent disability with or without any time lost in his or her employment (for example, if an employee is compensated for a loss of hearing resulting from excessive noise in the workplace). ‘Fatality’ means a death resulting from a work-related incident that has been accepted for compensation by a Workers’ Compensation Board or Commission.

Note: If the summary tables are reproduced and/or published, the source of the data must be acknowledged.

Other statistical summaries published in the National Work Injury and Disease Statistics publication
The publication includes statistical summaries by jurisdiction cross tabulated by gender, age, nature and source of injury/disease/fatality, event, part of body, occupation and industry. Additional cross tabulations are published by injury/disease for Industry by nature and source of injury/disease, part of body and event. This publication can be ordered on-line at 'Publication Order Form'.
