Key Statistical Measures - history/background

The Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) of the Workers' Compensation Boards/Commissions of Canada manage an ongoing project to develop a set of key financial and statistical indicators which can be used to describe the workers’ compensation insurance system in Canada overall, and to provide comparisons across jurisdictions.

In addition to the Key Statistical Measures (KSMs) and Indicator Ratios which are currently published, others are still under development. The developmental work is carried out by a Working Group reporting to the CFOs, and includes representation from each jurisdiction. The activities of the Working Group focus on developing methods/definitions which each WCB/Commission can apply in order to ensure, as far as possible, comparability across jurisdictions.

All jurisdictions' statistics are validated in accordance with agreed upon Definitions (which may vary from definitions used in jurisdictions' Annual Reports).

The Preface Reports show some of the differences between workers’ compensation jurisdictions that can be contributing factors to the KSMs and Indicator Ratios.
